Thiruvangad Temple
Made by SivamDesign
The Thiruvangad temple, dedicated to Sree Rama, is one of the more important temples of North Malabar. It is located at Thalassery in Kannur district, in the state of Kerala. The most striking feature of this temple is the copper sheeting of its roof, due to which it is known popularly as the Brass Pagoda. A part of the temple was damaged by Tipu's troops in the 18th century, but the temple itself is believed to have been saved from destruction by a miracle. It was one of the outposts of the Thalassery fort in the eighteenth century. In its precincts, many conferences were held between the officials of the East India Company and local leaders, after which important political treaties and agreements were signed.

Indian Pond Heron (Breeding)
Made by SivamDesign
Had parked besides a stream while taking a break from driving when I found this Pond Heron perched on a tree. The bird is in its breeding colours. As can be seen in this photo during the breeding season their heads and neck turn brown, chins and upper throat white, backs turn a rich maroon, breasts turn buff-brown and they grow a longish crest. Also seen clearly is the bill that is bluish at the base, yellowish at the centre and black at the tip. This particular bird has got red legs and this is not often seen which suggests that this is not a normal change for adults during the breeding season and some have suggested the possibility of it being genetic variants. To see the bird in its non-breeding colours !

Indian Pond Heron (Breeding)

The Indian Pond Heron or Paddybird is a small heron of Old World origins. During the breeding season, as seen in this photo, there are records of individuals with red legs. The numbers do not suggest that this is a normal change for adults during the breeding season and some have suggested the possibility of it being genetic variants. The Indian Pond Heron's feeding habitat is marshy wetlands. They usually feed at the edge of ponds but make extensive use of floating vegetation such as Water hyacinth to access deeper water. The primary food of these birds includes crustaceans, aquatic insects, fishes, tadpoles and sometimes leeches. To see the bird in its non-breeding colours !

Indian Pond Heron (Breeding)

While I was clicking photos the bird it got a bit nervous and started to move away from me thus giving me the chance to get a better shot of its back. I was standing more than 50 feet away. During the breeding season their heads and neck turn brown, chins and upper throat white, backs turn a rich maroon, breasts turn buff-brown and they grow a longish crest. The bill also turns bluish at the base, yellowish at the centre and black at the tip as can be clearly seen. These birds are very common in India, and are usually solitary foragers but numbers of them may sometimes feed in close proximity during the dry seasons. To see the bird in its non-breeding colours !

The Indian Pond Heron in its breeding colours that appear prior to the Monsoons. In the breeding season they nest in small colonies, often with other wading birds, usually on platforms of sticks in trees or shrubs. Most nests are built at a height of about 9 to 10 metres and in large leafy trees. To see the bird in its comparatively drab non-breeding colours !

Little Cormorant
Made by SivamDesign
Was driving along a river when I saw this Little Cormorant perched on a stump. These 50 cm birds are the commonest and smallest Cormorants. They are gregarious by nature and swim with only head and neck exposed. They often dive not to be seen for many seconds, popping up far from where they dived. Consummate swimmers as can be judged by their webbed feet. Eats mostly fish, but also tadpoles and crustaceans.

Little Cormorant

Saw this Little Cormorant drying off perched on the branch of a dead tree besides a river. They are often seen perched on poles, trees or rocks with their wings spread open to dry after having dived into the water looking for fish, tadpoles and crustaceans. Their range includes most of India south of the Himalayas. Their short, thick necks and head are distinctive.

Riverside Homes
Made by SivamDesign
Another shot of the colony, this time covering the approach road. The house on the right - inside the housing colony - is a typical villa of an affluent family. Whereas on the left, on the other side of the river, we can see the middle-class homes. On the extreme left, the brightly coloured roof, is a temple.

Verandah
Made by U A Satish
This is a verandah in an old ancestral home in North Malabar, called Tharawad., which is built in the traditional style. The pillars are solid teak wood. Where the climate is hot and humid, the verandah is the best place to enjoy the cool air under its shade and to. experience an affinity with nature.

Disused House-boat
Made by SivamDesign
Saw this disused and rather forlorn looking houseboat while driving by. Such house-boats are popular among tourists who frequent Kerala's famous backwaters. The National Geographic Traveller has listed Kerala as one of the top 50 'must see destinations of a lifetime.'

Cattle Egret
Made by SivamDesign
These birds are often seen around cattle eating insects disturbed by the animals and hence the name. White in colour except in the breeding season. Yellow bills and black feet diagnostic.

Solitary Boat

Clicked this rather lonely looking boat from a bridge I passed while driving by. The now ubiquitous mobile towers can be seen in the background. They do mar the beauty of the landscape.
